The Dream
January 25 — February 14, 2025
Gaga is pleased to present Mathieu Malouf’s “The Dream” which will be the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery in Los Angeles and his first in the United States since “Women and Penguins” at Nahmad Contemporary in New York almost exactly one year ago. The 13 works on view are rooted in a historically significant series of works using dehydrated mushrooms the artist has been developing over the last decade, but this is the first time they will be presented in a cohesive body of work in a single exhibition. Inspired by Malouf’s deepening spiritual practice, the abstract compositions are the result of extended meditations on the sublime, divinity, perfection and the eternal nature of the human soul. While sharing the DNA of some of his previous “mushroom paintings”, these work reflect an unprecedented level of craftsmanship in the encapsulation of mushroom and subsequent chemical plating process to render surfaces as highly reflective as technically possible, emphasizing the theme of inner reflection and enlightenment. Gold has long been a symbol of wealth, not just materially but also in terms of spiritual richness or abundance. Mirrors can reflect this abundance back into one’s life symbolizing that the prosperity one seeks in already within or around them, waiting to be recognized.
