Gaga is pleased to present the exhibition La Mazeta, Primera Muestra de Obra ANTI-KINÉTICA de Juan José Gurrola in collaboration with Mauricio Marcin on view from July 27th through October 13th, 2012.

The show is composed of two fragments. The first one presents a selection of thirty drawings from the ‘Purple Book’, a sketchbook composed of 102 pages on which Gurrola drew during a night in August 1979. This is the first time the drawings will be on view to the public. The second fragment of the show is made up of an office / live archive where the research and cataloguing of Gurrola’s work will be open for view. Fernando Mesta and Mauricio Marcin curated this archive in conjunction with Fundación Gurrola A.C.

The first part of the show exemplifies a specific disciplinary exercise by displaying the ‘Purple Book’ drawings, the second part configures and makes visible through the archive the notion of Gurrola as a multifaceted artist traversing indistinctly between disciplines and ‘occupying all lanes at the same time,’ quoting the artist (theatre, film, radio, architecture, literature, scenic arts, photography, video, drawing, painting, etc). About Gurrola, Jíbaro Pérez said, “The idea of Juan José Gurrola as a multimedia and interdisciplinary avant-gardist will finally lay still in Mexican pop culture by 2075.”

The archive is presented on worktables. Different files will be showing diverse material related to Gurrola such as screenplays, unpublished poetry, photographs, playbills, documentation of his art, translations, texts, videos, etc. The tables function as a unifying space suggesting relationships between different moments of his work. On the subject Alfonso Reyes says, “To unify is not to flatten things by making them loose their self-expression, but to establish between them a regular system of connections. Life is a greater expression of itself while the connections between its different parts is higher”.

In the same room as the archive a photography studio will be periodically registering Gurrola’s work from private collections and Fundació Gurrola A.C., seeking to anthologize a catalogue raisonné of his artwork. In this sense, the more than three hundred located works will be registered and photographed throughout the exhibition.

The title for the show La Mazeta, Primera Muestra de Obra ANTI-KINÉTICA de Juan José Gurrola is a reference to a phrase used on the film Robarte el Arte which the artist along with Gelsen Gas and Arnaldo Coen filmed in Kassel, Germany during Documenta 5 in 1972. In the film the trio steal the art from museums and galleries and paste it with scotch tape on a rock at Wilhelmsöhe Park. The stolen art is trapped underneath an asterisk and is available to the curious passerby. After a few seconds a spectator approaches the scotch tape sign and observes it. At this moment in the film the artists thank the spectator for contemplating for a moment the artwork and they break out in joy for having created the first anti-kinetic piece of art. Their thesis might probably be false and they might have not created the first piece of anti-kinetic art. In any case, this is for sure Juan José Grurrola’s first anti-kinetic art show.

The ‘Purple Book’ is made up of figurative and abstract drawings. Within the figurative works Gurrola drew a series of flowerpots and plants. In the flowerpot drawings the artist always recalls the woman motif: “The female figure is the totality of forms. Taking into account past decisive and great moments of my life, the drawing of a curtain or sheet become women in a seducing act, of absolute and extreme lust. I don’t see a tree but a woman’s butt or a young woman’s attitude while looking underneath something. Extremely strange but the form is so strong to the eye”.

La mazeta is the beginning of a long-term project alongside Fundación Gurrola A.C. that seeks a new circulation and reading on Juan José Gurrola’s artwork as well as the study of its links with the rest of his oeuvre.

Gaga se complace en presentar la exposición La Mazeta, Primera Muestra de Obra ANTI- KINÉTICA de Juan José Gurrola, un proyecto en colaboración con Mauricio Marcin.

La muestra se compone de dos fragmentos. El primero exhibe una selección de 30 dibujos provenientes del “Libro Morado”, un cuaderno de 102 hojas que Gurrola dibujó en una sola noche durante el mes de agosto en 1979. Esta es la primera vez que los dibujos estarán expuestos al público. El segundo fragmento de la exposición consiste en una oficina-archivo que pone a disposición del público la investigación realizada sobre Juan José Gurrola. Este archivo fue curado por Fernando Mesta y Mauricio Marcin en colaboración con la Fundación Gurrola A.C.

Si bien la exhibición de los dibujos del “Libro Morado” ejemplifica un ejercicio disciplinario específico, la exposición, a través del archivo, configura y hace visible la noción de Juan José Gurrola como un artista poliédrico que se movió indistintamente entre disciplinas y “ocupando varios carriles al mismo tiempo”, en voz del autor (teatro, cine, radio, arquitectura, literatura, artes escénicas, fotografía, video, dibujo, pintura, etcétera). Al respecto dice Jíbaro Pérez: “La idea de Juan José Gurrola como un vanguardista de la multimedia y la interdisciplina en México, terminará por asentarse en la voz popular en el 2075”.

El archivo se presenta como una mesa de trabajo. Sobre la mesa habrá carpetas que contendrán documentos sobre diversos temas relativos a Gurrola: guiones de cine, poesía inédita, fotografías, carteles de las obras de teatro que montó, fotografías de exposiciones de artes visuales, traducciones, textos, vídeos, fotografías, etcétera. La mesa de trabajo funciona como un espacio unificador en el que las carpetas se mueven para sugerir relaciones entre momentos.

Dice al respecto Alfonso Reyes: “Unificar no es achatar las cosas haciéndoles perder su expresión propia, sino establecer entre todas ellas un sistema regular de conexiones. Una vida es tanto más vida cuanto mayor es la relación entre las diferentes partes del ser”.

En la misma sala destinada para el archivo, se construyó un estudio de fotografía, en el cual se registrarán periódicamente distintas obras de Juan José Gurrola provenientes de colecciones particulares y de la Fundación Gurrola A.C., con miras a confeccionar un catálogo razonado de la obra plástica del artista. De tal forma cerca de 300 obras que ya han sido localizadas, serán registradas y fotografiadas a lo largo de los dos meses que durará la muestra.

El título de la exposición La Mazeta, Primera Muestra de Obra ANTI-KINÉTICA de Juan José Gurrola refiere a una frase inscrita en la película Robarte el Arte, que Gurrola junto a Gelsen Gas y Arnaldo Coen, filmó en Kassel, Alemania durante Documenta 5 en 1972. En la citada película el trío de artistas se roba el arte de los museos y las galerías y lo pega a una piedra en el parque Wilhelmsöhe con scotch-tape. El arte queda atrapado bajo un asterisco y a disposición de algún curioso. Tras algunos segundos, un espectador se acerca al asterisco de cinta adhesiva y lo observa. En ese momento, en la película, agradecen al espectador haber contemplado el arte por un segundo y el trío de artistas se congratula de haber creado la primera obra de arte anti-kinética. Su tesis probablemente sea falsa y la primera obra de arte anti kinético no fue creada por ellos. En todo caso, es cierto que la presente exposición es la primera muestra de arte anti-kinético de Juan José Gurrola.

El “Libro Morado” tiene dibujos figurativos y abstractos. En los figurativos Gurrola dibujó una serie de macetas y plantas.

En sus dibujos de macetas se impone siempre el tema de la mujer: ‘’La figura femenina es la totalidad de las formas.

Inclusive, me ha pasado en grandes, decisivos momentos de mi vida que el dibujo de las cortinas o las sábanas se vuelven mujeres en el acto de seducción, absolutamente de una lascivia extrema. Como que no veo un árbol, sino la nalga de una mujer, o la actitud de una jovencita mirando debajo de algo. Extrañísimo, pero es que es tan fuerte la forma al ojo”.

La mazeta, es el inicio de un proyecto a largo plazo, en colaboración con la Fundación Gurrola A.C. que busca poner en circulación y generar nuevas lecturas de la obra plástica Juan José Gurrola y estudiar los vínculos entre esta obra y el resto de su producción.
