In June 2008 Gaga presented Alex Hubbard’s first show in Mexico. Eight years later and with a prolific and experimental practice following it it’s possible to confirm the transformations in his work: his questioning of the pertinence of painting and what abstraction is today. Is it stuck in a dead end or rather in a sort of loop like the one traced with the works in the show?

Portrait of a German painter (Female), the unlikely twin of Portrait of a German painter (Male), winks to the German abstract painting tradition to which the artist has always identified with. Halfway between readymade and abstraction this painting becomes a window that opens into a doubt. Could we still say we stand in front of an abstract painting?

In their own way the three pieces of the series Bar Paintings share this same instability oscillating between painting and sculpture. With their small format they presume a continuation of the domestic space apparent in the artist’s individual bars as medicine cabinets to alleviate solitude and the present conditions surrounding contemporary production. For a moment the images covering them function as mere props. More than paintings these are theatrical gestures that yield secret space – the possibility of escape hidden only to be canceled by the image and its own iconic seduction. Painting giving up painting and returning to it. For the ones who know Hubbard’s work this sudden meddling into the figurative draws attention. Are these pentimentos on his own abstract work? Maybe the answer could be found in Itchy-Chaps where the image that serves as an invite to ‘El Cafecito’ blurs and we observe it at the same moment when we enter abstract territory.

The show closes with El Templo, where more than closing it opens its view to an overlook where we can see at a distance a ghostly imagined city space projected onto another ghost, the image of a sculpture in a video.

In turn the whole set of works convey a meeting place as in a a café.

En junio de 2008 Gaga presentó la primera muestra de Alex Hubbard en México. Ocho años mas tarde y tras una prolífica experimentación del artista es posible constatar las transformaciones ocurridas dentro de su obra : el cuestionamiento en su trabajo de la pertinencia de la pintura y la abstracción hoy en día. ¿Se encuentra esta ante un callejón sin salida o mas bien en una suerte de loop como la que se boceta en las obras que conforman la presente exposición ?

Portrait of a German painter (Female), la improbable melliza de Portrait of a German Painter (Male), hace un guiño a la tradición de la pintura abstracta alemana con la que el artista siempre se ha sentido identificado. A medio camino entre readymade y abstracción, esta pintura se vuelve una ventana que se abre mas bien hacia una duda. ¿Podríamos decir con certeza que estamos aún ante una pintura abstracta ?

Por su parte, las tres primeras piezas de la serie Bar Paintings comparten esa misma inestabilidad que oscila entre la pintura y la escultura. En su pequeño formato suponen una continuación para el espacio doméstico de los bares individuales del artista, botiquines de emergencia para aliviar la soledad. Por momentos las imágenes que los cubren funcionan como meros props. Más que pinturas, estos son gestos teatrales tras los cuales se puede ocultar un secreto o una posibilidad de escape solo para que en un segundo o tercer momento, y pese a que el artista les niegue autonomía, las imágenes llamen la atención hacia su propia seducción icónica. Pintura dejando de ser pintura y volviendo a serlo. Para quienes conocen el trabajo de Hubbard llama la atención esta súbita intromisión de lo figurativo. ¿Se tratan de pentimentos sobre su propio trabajo abstracto? Tal vez la respuesta habría que buscarla en Itchy-Chaps donde la imagen que sirve de invitación al Cafecito, se desdibuja y la observamos al momento mismo de reingresar al territorio de lo abstracto.

La muestra se cierra con El templo, o más que cerrar se abre a un mirador en donde podemos ver a la distancia una ciudad imaginaria y fantasmal proyectada sobre otro fantasma, la imagen en video de una escultura.

A su vez estas piezas en su conjunto proyectan un lugar de encuentro, como lo es un café.
